Malware
An umbrella term for any software intentionally designed to cause damage, steal data, or gain unauthorised access to computer systems.
Malware (short for "malicious software") is any program or code created to harm your device, steal your information, or give attackers control over your system. It includes viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, adware, and ransomware — each with different methods and goals.
Common Types of Malware
- Viruses — attach to legitimate files and spread when shared
- Trojans — disguise as useful apps (e.g., fake banking apps) but contain hidden malicious code
- Spyware — secretly monitors your activity, capturing passwords and financial data
- Adware — displays unwanted advertisements and may track browsing habits
- Ransomware — encrypts your files and demands payment for the decryption key
APK Scams in Malaysia
A growing threat in Malaysia involves fake APK files shared via WhatsApp or Telegram. These malicious Android apps — often disguised as food delivery apps, cleaning services, or government forms — can steal banking credentials and intercept SMS OTPs. Only install apps from official stores (Google Play, App Store).
Staying Protected
- Install reputable antivirus/anti-malware software and keep it updated
- Never download apps or files from unknown sources or suspicious links
- Keep your operating system and apps updated — patches fix known vulnerabilities
- Be cautious of USB drives from unknown sources
- Back up important files regularly
